Regular, independently verifiable PoR is one of the clearest signals of an honest exchange.

  • Cold storage: the majority of assets kept offline, beyond the reach of online attackers. 
  • Multi-party computation (MPC): private keys split into shares across separate secure environments, so no single device or person ever holds a complete key. 
  • Insurance funds: reserves set aside to compensate users in the event of a security incident. 
  • Multi-factor authentication and monitoring: layered account protection and continuous risk monitoring for suspicious activity. 

Safeguarding of client funds

Regulated frameworks increasingly separate customer money from the exchange’s own balance sheet. Under MiCA, for example, client fiat must be placed with an EU credit institution by the end of the next business day, and the exchange cannot use customer cash to fund its own operations. This safeguarding is precisely the protection absent in the failures that wiped out customer funds, and its presence is a strong trust signal.

Putting it together, a practical due-diligence checklist covers five things: 

  • Recognised licence: confirm the exchange holds a licence in the markets it serves. 
  • Proof of reserves: check that it publishes regular, independently verifiable reserve attestations. 
  • Custody model: understand how assets are held, and whether it uses cold storage and MPC. 
  • Fund safeguarding: confirm client funds are segregated and protected from the exchange’s own balance sheet. 
  • Track record: weigh its operating history and security record over time. 

An exchange that scores well on all five is one you can reasonably trust; weakness on any one deserves caution.
